The Norwegian Commission on Low Emissions was appointed by the Norwegian government on March 11, 2005. The Commission has been charged with the task of describing how Norway as a country can achieve significant reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases.
The Commission will develop scenarios based on a 50-80 percent reduction in emissions by 2050, and evaluate the costs associated with each of the scenarios. The work will result in an official government report (NOU).
The Commission comprises seven members and is chaired by Professor Jørgen Randers. A secretariat has been established to assist the Commission.
The Commission began its work on April 15, 2005, and according to plan will submit its report on October 19, 2006.
The Commission will come into contact with a wide range of people representing various facets of society in their work. This will take place through conferences, open hearings, and Internet consultations, among other things.
